You will be able to display all your skills between thousands of activities, with the advantage of doing so in a constantly unique and unparalleled context!
If you like excursions, Puglia is the right place for you: whether on foot, on bikes, jeep, ATV, relaxing or adventurous…you just have to decide where and when.
If you love challenges, you will find much to entertain you: the Pugliese coasts are ideal for windsurfing, the caves are a fascinating experience for speleology enthusiasts and the hinterland offers the unique opportunity of launching yourself, so to speak, in an electrifying paragliding experience.
But the union of sport and nature does not end here: there are several golf courses scattered throughout the region, horse-riding schools, nature parks and reserves where one can practice bird watching, whereas for those who love the sea and its hidden treasures diving will not disappoint them.
If, on the other hand, you love everything that has to do with history and our origins Puglia is your country! Have you ever heard about the Altamura Man? It is a fossilized skeleton of an archaic man tracing back to the Palaeolithic, between 400,000 and 100,000 years ago, discovered in 1993 in Alta Murgia, in the province of Bari. Its excellent state of conservation makes it one of the most extraordinary European Palaeolithic findings.
In Altamura again, inside a cave, thousands of footprints of dinosaurs which lived in the Late Cretaceous (circa 70 million years ago) have been found. The exceptional thing is that they are around 30,000 footprints, perfectly conserved and pertaining to various species of dinosaurs.
For archaeology enthusiasts, Canosa is ‘a must’: the Civic Archaeological museum offers several evidences of the prehistoric and Appulian era; the Canosan vases, polychrome and figurative, famous in ancient times and still sought after by collectors. But Canosa is also its hypogeum, found a bit all over the city: funerary monuments in chambers carved in white tufo with frescoed walls. Important remains are also found further to the south, like in Cavallino, Vaste, Roca, all in the province of Lecce, in Salento; and then the National Archaeology Museum in Taranto, fundamental stage for those who wish to learn Magna Graecia’s history.
But there are several other things to do: from permanent exhibitions, like the one dedicated to the Impressionist painter Giuseppe De Nittis near the gallery of Barletta, to international level musical events like the Festival of Valle d’Itria, one of the main operatic Italian festivals; from Italian language and culture courses, if you come from an other country, to those of Pugliese cuisine, to grape harvesting done at night; and if you really don’t wish to do anything at all there are always the health farms and Spas which will pamper you from the first to the last day.
